New Data - People in employment

Data on the number and proportion of people in employment from the ONS/Nomis Annual Population Survey has been added to LG Inform/LG Inform Plus. In England, for Quarter 1 2025, the total population who are in employment (aged 16+) was 27,984,600.

The proportion of those aged 16+ in employment (Q1 2015) was 58.5 per cent compared to 58.7 per cent ten years previously. For those aged 25-49 it was 81.6 per cent (81.1 per cent in 2015), for aged 50-64 it was 71.5 per cent (68.9 per cent in 2015), and for aged 65+ it was 11.5 per cent (10.2 per cent in 2015).

In London 15.0 per cent of people aged 65 and over are currently in employment, whereas in the North East it is 6.1 per cent. Proportions are based on ONS Mid-year population estimates in each age band.
